DESCRIPTION:We’re proud to present this FREE family-friendly event in collaboration with Baroque Music Festival\, Corona del Mar.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJOIN US for a FREE\, fun\, and relaxed afternoon for the whole family! The San Diego Early Music Society and our friends at Baroque Music Festival Corona del Mar (BMF CdM) are excited to present a 50-minute concert for young people ages 0-18 and their accompanying parents or guardians at the Mission Valley Library. The afternoon will feature musical storytelling; themed coloring sheets for kids\, teens\, and adults to fill in while listening (crayons and pencils also provided); a baroque instrument petting zoo and snacks after the performance; and lots of Baroque-era music discovery! \n\n\n\n\n\nLed  by BMF CdM Education Program Director Lindsey Strand-Polyak\, and featuring Lindsey Strand-Polyak and Courtney Kuroda on baroque violins; Eric Tinkerhess on baroque cello and viola da gamba; and Jason Yoshida on theorbo and baroque guitar \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSDEMS is supported by the City of San Diego Cultural Affairs. DESCRIPTION:Tablature: When\, Where\, and Why?\n\n\n\nAn introduction through a lecture and performance to the history of 16th century lute tablature\, spanning from 1507 in Italy to the last German tablatures printed in the 1590s. If you are a guitarist or have an interest in music history\, this is for you! \n\n\n\nThis event is FREE and open to all! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrad Rice is an alumnus of SDSU with a B.A. in Music Education. Throughout his time at Grossmont College and SDSU\, Brad studied classical guitar under Fred Benedetti\, Robert Wetzel\, and Sean Bassett before picking up the lute in the summer of 2021. Since then\, Brad has been awarded 2 scholarships from the Lute Society of America and has performed in masterclasses for Bor Zuljan\, Paul Odette\, Evangelina Mascardi\, and Nigel North. Currently\, he studies Renaissance lute under Jacob Heringman and Ariel Abramovich. S. Bach’s St. John Passion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Michael Marissen | The Portrayal of Jews and Christians in Bach’s St. John Passion\n\n\n\nIntroduction by Dr. Ruben Valenzuela\, founder and artistic director\, Bach Collegium San Diego. \n\n\n\nIllustrating his talk with musical examples\, Dr. Marissen will speak on the ways Bach depicts Jews and Christians and on how Bach musically heightens not only various marvelous sentiments\, but also various troubling sentiments found in the New Testament and some key writings of Martin Luther. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael Marissen is the Daniel Underhill Professor Emeritus of Music at Swarthmore College. He is co-author\, with Daniel R. Melamed\, of BachCantataTexts.org\, a freely available source for historically informed translations of the texts in J. S. Bach’s vocal music. He has written many essays on music and religion for general-audience venues\, including the Huffington Post and The New York Times. His most recent books are Bach & God and Bach against Modernity\, both available from Oxford University Press. Melamed is professor emeritus of musicology at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is director of the Bloomington Bach Cantata Project and co-author\, with Michael Marissen\, of BachCantataTexts.org\, a freely available source for historically informed translations of the texts of J. Both events are FREE. \n\n\n\nREGISTER TO PARTICIPATE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWORKSHOP: Thursday\, February 12\, 5:00 pm\, St. David’s Episcopal Church (Clairemont) \n\n\n\nThe SDEMS is proud to host ModernMedieval Voices for a two-day residency in San Diego!  \n\n\n\nModernMedieval Voices is an all-female ensemble created by Dr. Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek to present programs that combine medieval chant and polyphony with new commissions and music from later eras. She is joined by singers drawn from some of the country’s leading early and new music ensembles\, including Roomful of Teeth\, Pomerium\, and Trinity Wall Street Choir. \n\n\n\nModernMedieval Voices presents a lecture/workshop that\, via Hildegard\, focuses on the challenges of finding and performing medieval music. We will look at the manuscripts\, examine Hildegard’s compositional style\, and discuss differing ways of interpreting the notation\, comparing different transcriptions of several of her chants\, including Caritas Habundat and O Viridissima Virga. The presentation also deals with the challenges of programing Hildegard in a modern concert setting. \n\n\n\nWe will informally sing through some passages from the chants under discussion to show the different approaches and results thereof. This will include addressing the skills necessary for good ensemble singing. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is open to singers and non-singers alike. The San Diego Early Music Society will provide all materials. She is joined by singers drawn from some of the country’s leading early and new music ensembles\, including Roomful of Teeth\, Pomerium\, and Trinity Wall Street Choir. \n\n\n\nThis a cappella program features some of Hildegard of Bingen’s most ecstatic chants\, including O Jerusalem and O Viridissima Virga\, reflecting her most important sources of inspiration: Mother Church\, Saints\, The Virgin Mary\, and The Divine Feminine\, as represented by Love and Wisdom. These chants are interwoven with new works by acclaimed composers Caroline Shaw\, the youngest-ever winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music\, Caleb Burhans\, “New York’s mohawked Mozart” (Time Out New York)\, Pamela Madsen\, Daniel Thomas Davis\, and Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek. The new works are based on\, or influenced by\, Hildegard’s philosophic writings\, her music\, and her visions\, and each composer presents their own unique and personal interpretation.
