SUMMARY:Lecture: The Elements of a Bach Passion
DESCRIPTION:This FREE event is part of an exciting collaboration between SDEMS and the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus\, featuring two SDEMS-sponsored public lectures that complement LJS&C’s upcoming performances of J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Daniel R. Melamed | The Elements of a Bach Passion\n\n\n\nIntroduction by Dr. Ruben Valenzuela\, founder and artistic director\, Bach Collegium San Diego. \n\n\n\nWhat was a passion setting in J. S. Bach’s time? What was its purpose? When and where was it heard? What textual and musical materials was it made from? How were its words and music meant to be understood in Bach’s day? If we are going to understand what Bach’s St. John Passion might mean today\, we need to start with these questions about the piece as its librettist and composer regarded it in 1724. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel R. Melamed is professor emeritus of musicology at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is director of the Bloomington Bach Cantata Project and co-author\, with Michael Marissen\, of BachCantataTexts.org\, a freely available source for historically informed translations of the texts of J. S. Bach’s vocal music. His book Hearing Bach’s Passions\, for general readers\, is available from Oxford University Press. He also serves as president of the Mozart Society of America. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHEN: Tuesday\, February 24\, 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\nWHERE: Conrad Prebys Music Center\, UCSD\, Room 127.  Paid parking in the Gilman parking structure on 3100 Gilman Dr.

SUMMARY:ModernMedieval voices Workshop: "Singing Hildegard: From the Page to the Stage"
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of a two-day residency that includes a performance by the ensemble on Wednesday\, February 11\, and a workshop led by the artists on Thursday\, February 12. Both events are FREE. \n\n\n\nREGISTER TO PARTICIPATE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWORKSHOP: Thursday\, February 12\, 5:00 pm\, St. David’s Episcopal Church (Clairemont) \n\n\n\nThe SDEMS is proud to host ModernMedieval Voices for a two-day residency in San Diego! \n\n\n\nModernMedieval Voices is an all-female ensemble created by Dr. Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek to present programs that combine medieval chant and polyphony with new commissions and music from later eras. She is joined by singers drawn from some of the country’s leading early and new music ensembles\, including Roomful of Teeth\, Pomerium\, and Trinity Wall Street Choir. \n\n\n\nModernMedieval Voices presents a lecture/workshop that\, via Hildegard\, focuses on the challenges of finding and performing medieval music. We will look at the manuscripts\, examine Hildegard’s compositional style\, and discuss differing ways of interpreting the notation\, comparing different transcriptions of several of her chants\, including Caritas Habundat and O Viridissima Virga. The presentation also deals with the challenges of programing Hildegard in a modern concert setting. \n\n\n\nWe will informally sing through some passages from the chants under discussion to show the different approaches and results thereof. This will include addressing the skills necessary for good ensemble singing. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is open to singers and non-singers alike. The San Diego Early Music Society will provide all materials. REGISTRATION REQUIRED. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to all thanks to the support of the City of San Diego. \n\n\n\nREGISTER TO PARTICIPATE

SUMMARY:ModernMedieval Voices Concert: "The Living Word"
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of a two-day residency that includes a performance by the ensemble on Wednesday\, February 11\, and a workshop led by the artists on Thursday\, February 12. Both events are FREE. \n\n\n\n\n\nPERFORMANCE: Wednesday\, February 11\, 7:00 pm\, All Souls’ Episcopal Church (Point Loma) \n\n\n\nThe SDEMS is proud to host ModernMedieval Voices for a two-day residency in San Diego. \n\n\n\nThis a cappella program features some of Hildegard of Bingen’s most ecstatic chants\, including O Jerusalem and O Viridissima Virga\, reflecting her most important sources of inspiration: Mother Church\, Saints\, The Virgin Mary\, and The Divine Feminine\, as represented by Love and Wisdom. These chants are interwoven with new works by acclaimed composers Caroline Shaw\, the youngest-ever winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music\, Caleb Burhans\, “New York’s mohawked Mozart” (Time Out New York)\, Pamela Madsen\, Daniel Thomas Davis\, and Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek. The new works are based on\, or influenced by\, Hildegard’s philosophic writings\, her music\, and her visions\, and each composer presents their own unique and personal interpretation. The resulting program is an exciting tour de force for both singers and audience. \n\n\n\n“For those who miss the commitment and quality of Anonymous 4 in the realms of medieval and contemporary music\, rest assured that ModernMedieval Voices have taken up the tapestry without dropping a stitch. The tradition continues\, to borrow Hildegard’s words\, per exempla puri soni—through examples of pure sound” (Anne E. Johnson\, ClassicalVoiceAmerica.org) \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to all thanks to the support of the City of San Diego.
