Tablature: When, Where, and Why?

An introduction through a lecture and performance to the history of 16th century lute tablature, spanning from 1507 in Italy to the last German tablatures printed in the 1590s. If you are a guitarist or have an interest in music history, this is for you!

Brad Rice is an alumnus of SDSU with a B.A. in Music Education. Throughout his time at Grossmont College and SDSU, Brad studied classical guitar under Fred Benedetti, Robert Wetzel, and Sean Bassett before picking up the lute in the summer of 2021. Since then, Brad has been awarded 2 scholarships from the Lute Society of America and has performed in masterclasses for Bor Zuljan, Paul Odette, Evangelina Mascardi, and Nigel North. Currently, he studies Renaissance lute under Jacob Heringman and Ariel Abramovich. Brad also serves as the San Diego chapter leader for the Lute Society of America and publishes in the LSA Quarterly.
