After their superb San Diego debut with La Morra, we are delighted to welcome back harpsichordist Corina Marti and lutenist Michal Gondko in an intriguing recital of rare sixteenth-century Polish music. A perfect start to our Solo Series this season.
They made a brilliant debut in our series five years ago, and we could not wait any longer to welcome them back. The Gesualdo Six will present a selection of Renaissance motets and chansons from the French court, by composers such as Josquin des Prez, Antoine Brumel, Johannes Ockeghem, and Jean L’Héritier, focusing on European queens including Anne of Brittany, Margaret of Austria, Anne Boleyn, and Mary Tudor.

Renowned harpsichordist Jory Vinikour returns to San Diego, this time in a solo recital showcasing several Scarlatti sonatas. Now in its third year, our Solo Series expands to All Souls’ Episcopal Church, whose exceptional acoustics will perfectly complement Vinikour’s "dazzling playing" (Washington Classical Review).
Lute legend and “supreme poet of the lute” (Gramophone) Hopkinson Smith returns for his third appearance, and we are deeply honored to present this recital. His unique program—a tribute to John Dowland on the 400th anniversary of his death—features solo lute elaborations of Dowland’s Seven Passionate Pavans.
In the long history of the San Diego Early Music Society, Concerto Köln holds a very special place. Not only have they become dear friends, but they are also a consistent audience favorite. For their sixth appearance, they will share the stage with star violinist Shunske Sato and virtuoso recorder player Max Volbers in another thrilling program of baroque gems by Telemann, Vivaldi, Handel, Sammartini, and the reconstructed violin concerto BWV 1052R by J. S. Bach.

In a season full of audience favorites, this is the debut we’ve long anticipated. Violinist extraordinaire Amandine Beyer and her ensemble Gli Incogniti—hailed across Europe and Asia—have been rarer guests in the United States. Their program explores the “bewitching and endlessly inventive” (Gramophone) music of Nicola Matteis, as well as works by Henry Purcell. The performance promises to be “rich in spontaneity and a sense of exploration, wonderfully addictive” (Gramophone).
To conclude our thrilling Solo Series, celebrated harpsichordist and organist Benjamin Alard returns for an artist residency at All Souls, featuring two recitals over two days. Highlights include the Italian Concerto on harpsichord on Friday evening and the iconic Toccata and Fugue in D minor on the organ on Sunday. As a fitting conclusion to our season, we are thrilled to welcome back star countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and his Artaserse ensemble. Their electrifying appearance four years ago remains vivid in our memory. This return promises equally breathtaking artistry, with a program of cantatas by Alessandro Scarlatti, Baldassare Galuppi, Nicola Porpora, and Antonio Vivaldi (“Cessate, mai cessate!”), as well as concertos by Durante and Vivaldi.
