Carmina Burana 1229-1929
From the Middle Ages to the Great Depression
A musical performance, discussion, and demonstration

Saturday, April 20, 2024
7:00-9:00 p.m.
Great Hall, St. Paul's Cathedral
2728 Sixth Ave, San Diego, CA 92103

City Ballet Maestro John Nettles explains how, in the 1930s, as the world lurched from the Great Depression towards World War II, a moderately successful German composer with antiquarian leanings transfigured these forgotten, 700-year-old songs into a vast meditation on the meaning of life and the vicissitudes of fate.
City Ballet resident choreographer Geoff Gonzalez will share his creative process and vision that imported the poems’ absurdist portrayal of the world’s instability from the 13th into the 20th century, sharing video previews of the dance.
You can see City Ballet’s acclaimed production of Carmina Burana live at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, at the Center Theater of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 North Escondido Boulevard. More information about this performance (and a special gift to attendees!) will be available at this event. We hope to see you there!
