During its long heyday as the capital, first of the Eastern Roman Empire (330-1453) and later of the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922), the city of Constantinople (modern Istanbul) was the crossroads of Europe, West Asia and North Africa, the multicultural nexus of the Christian and Muslim worlds. The Canadian ensemble Constantinople honors this heritage with a program drawing on the musical traditions of the civilizations that met in the great metropolis, playing instruments from both the Middle East and Renaissance Europe.
